Afried was escaping during the war and was shot. Due to a lack of medical attention and doctors he was left with no choice but to eventually amputate the leg. He developed more sadness following the war as his friends were able to start their lives, make businesses and support themselves. He was unable to do this and it caused him grief for a long time. He opened a drink shop with the loan to be able to give himself peace of mind.
